여기에서 사전은 (Pali-English_Dictionary 입니다)


여기에서 한국어로 번역하지 않은 것은 필자보다 더 많이 아시는 스님, 또 여러 법우님들 앞에서(번데기 앞에서 주름잡는) 상황을 피하기 위해서라고 해두겠습니다. :D


영어 잘 아시는 분들의 번역 기대해봅니다.

Tathāgata:


"he who has won through to the truth."



*관용구, 숙어: *won through => *win through



여기에서 truth는 보통 진리로 번역하는데요.


네이버 국어사전에서 정의하는 => (철학. 언제 어디서나 누구든지 승인할 수 있는 보편적인 법칙이나 사실)이 아니라.


바른 삼매에 이어서 (완전한 깨달음을 얻기 위해서 반드시 지켜야만 하는) (truth: 필수적인 법들과 율들에 대한 엄수嚴守)를 말하는 겁니다.


예를 들면 - (필수적인) 4성제에 관련된 바른견해를 가지고, 바른 사유, 바른 말, 바른 행위, 바른 생계 유지, 바른 노력, 바른 알아차림으로부터 이어지는 바른 삼매, 등에 대한 엄수嚴守를 말합니다.

부처님께서 출가한 목적은 "태어나지 않고, 늙지않고, 병들지 않고, 죽지않는 것"이었죠.

출가 이후에 두분의 외도 삼매 스승에게 가셨다가 자기의 목적과 다름을 아시고 떠나셨죠.

이후 고행을 통해서 "태어나지 않고, 늙지않고, 병들지 않고, 죽지않는 것"이 해결되지 않자.


이때껏 듣지 못하고 알지 못했던 방법 - 팔정도라는 새로운 방법을 통해서 부처님이 되셨던 것이죠.


또한 부처님께서 깨달음을 추구하셨던 이유는 <어떤 중생을 구하는 임무>가 있었다던지, <법을 설해야만 한다는 임무>가 있었다던지 그런 것이 아니죠.

부처님은 단지 자신의 개인의 문제들을 해결하시기 위해서 노력하셨던 분입니다.


(어느경전인지는 기억이 안나지만) 깨달으신 뒤에 부처님과 범천의 대화에서 보면 확실해지는데요.


부처님께서 어떠한 임무를 수행하고자 부처님이 되셨다면 굳이 범천이 나서서 부처님께 권청을 할 필요가 없었겠죠.



위의 사전에서 and whose mission is to proclaim the saving truth to all beings (cp. Miln 106). 이 부분은 쿳다카 니까야에서 설명되는 내용으로 생각됩니다.
