● Translated from the Pali by Ñanamoli Thera. edited and revised by Bhikkhu Bodhi. (M10)

Here a bhikkhu, gone to the forest or to the root of a tree or to an empty hut, sits down; having folded his legs crosswise, set his body erect, and established mindfulness in front of him, ever mindful he breathes in, mindful he breathes out.

● Translated from the Pali by Michael Olds

Here beggars, a beggar, having gotten himself off to the forest or to the root of some tree, or to some empty hut, and having taken up his seat there sitting down, body upright, legs bent-across-lapwise, and having set up satisfaction around the face, just so minds the in-breath, just so minds the out breath.

● Translated from the Pali by T.W. Rhys Davids

Herein, O bhikkhus, let a brother, going into the forest, or to the roots of a tree, or to an empty chamber, sit down cross-legged, holding the body erect, and set his mindfulness alert. Mindful let him inhale, mindful let him exhale.

● Translated from the Pali by Maurice Walshe

Here a monk, having gone into the forest, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty place, sits down cross-leqged, holding his body erect, having established mindfulness before him. Mindfully he breathes in, mindfully he breathes out.

● Translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

There is the case where a monk — having gone to the wilderness, to the shade of a tree, or to an empty building — sits down folding his legs crosswise, holding his body erect and setting mindfulness to the fore [lit: the front of the chest]. Always mindful, he breathes in; mindful he breathes out.

● WARREN: BUDDHISM IN TRANSLATIONS/Translated from the Pali by Henry Clark Warren

Whenever, O priests, a priest, retiring to the forest, or to the foot of a tree, or to an uninhabited spot, sits him down cross-legged with body erect and contemplative faculty intent, and contemplates his expirations, and contemplates his inspirations

● Ganges Sanga version, translator unlisted

Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu having gone to the forest, to the foot of a tree, or to a secluded place, sits down cross-legged, keeps his upper body erect, and directs mindfulness towards the object of meditation. Ever mindful, he breathes in, ever mindful he breathes out.

1) ābhujitvā - paṇidhāya - upaṭṭhapetvā
